In E.T.A. Hoffmann's "The Sandman," Nathanael kills Clara's eyes because he becomes convinced that she is actually a lifeless automaton created by the sinister Coppelius, who he believes is a malevolent figure from his childhood. Nathanael's descent into madness and paranoia leads him to believe that Clara's eyes are not real, and he becomes obsessed with proving this by destroying them. This act of violence is a manifestation of Nathanael's psychological turmoil and his inability to distinguish between reality and his own delusions. **

Nathanael from E.T.A. Hoffmann's "The Sandman" and Prince Friedrich of Homburg from Heinrich von Kleist's "The Prince of Homburg" can be compared in their struggles with reality and their inner conflicts. Both characters grapple with their own desires and fears, leading to a sense of inner turmoil and psychological instability. Additionally, both characters are haunted by their own obsessions and fears, which ultimately lead to their downfall. However, while Nathanael's struggles are rooted in his fear of the Sandman and his descent into madness, Prince Friedrich's struggles are centered around his disobedience and the consequences of his actions. **
